I had a thought after seeing the 15min preview of Avatar months ago that the story might be a little bit like the 1970 film ”Little Big Man”. In that film, Dustin Hoffman plays a white boy who is raised by Indians. His life moves between 2 worlds, that of the ‘white man’ and that of the ‘natives’ - It ends in a battle in which he has to choose a side… and yes, I was pretty close on the money.
There are many surprises in Avatar and I don’t want to give any away - The amount of creativity in the film is just amazing! It really is a quantum leap in film making - The detail in each frame is incredible and the 3D is immersive and completely forgotten about after the first few minutes. By the end of the film it didn’t really feel like I was wearing glasses and I wasn’t thinking about the 3D at all - just the story! I will be seeing this again on the big screen… In fact I’ll be buying a 3D display as soon as I can afford one (probably a few years after they are released!)…
As there is still a week to wait until release, I recommend “Little Big Man” if you haven’t seen it… It’s a good story - and so is AVATAR! We all knew that it was going to look amazing, and it does… but if you were worried that the story was going to be crap then worry no more! - the story is solid and full of emotion.
Well done to James Cameron and everyone involved! It was worth every cent!
